Teachers' struggles were the most important political development in Mexico in the early 1980s, with more than 100,000 mobilizing in 12 states against undemocratic unions controlled by the state, repression and bad working conditions. The banner that says "El maestro luchando/también está enseñando"/The teacher in struggle/is also teaching" was carried in tribute to Genáro Vásquez Rojas, a teacher killed for his activism.
