The September 1985 earthquake that devastated neighborhoods in Mexico City led to formation of many groups to defend people from eviction without reason and combat the corruption and inefficiency of officials responsible for reconstruction. The Earthquake Victims ("damnificados") Coordinating Committee (CUD) fought to have housing built for the homeless. One of the buildings is named after Rini Templeton in recognition of her work both in Mexico and the U.S. to get help directly to the people's organizations, not through the government. "Merry Christmas and a Decent Life" said one card she produced to raise funds. "Aqui nos quedaremos" (We shall stay here) expressed the people's spirit.
