Mexican iron, steel, and cement workers protested job displacement and layoffs with strikes and other efforts to win compensation (indemnización), job restoration and wage increases in 1985-86. In Guadalajara, cement workers also demanded union democracy with calls to have their union lead the struggle (Que el sindicato encabece nustra lucha).
