In Arizona's Clifton-Morenci area, the Phelps-Dodge mining company tried to impose cuts in wages and benefits on the mostly Mexican workers in 1983. The strike turned into a movement with community people joining, the National Guard was sent in, workers were jailed and tear-gassed. But they held a rally and fiesta on May 5, Cinco de mayo, even as 14 National Guard helicopters descended on the people. The strike continued for 3 years.
